Education is an important part of alpaca ownership. The following is a brief history of alpaca genetics and quality, and how they ended up in North America from Peru, Chile and Bolivia.

A Brief History of Alpacas

Alpacas come from the South American countries of Peru, Bolivia and Chile. For hundreds of years, if not thousands, the South American people in these countries raised alpaca and llama for their benefit. They used the alpaca fiber for weaving and spinning into textiles. This became one of the basic cornerstones for the Incan empire.

Accoyo

However, many of the alpaca and llama cross-bread, these were called huarizo, which created a mixed herd and animals of inferior quality. This all changed in the late 1940's, when an alpaca farmer in Peru named Don Julio Barreda noticed the output of each animals sheared fiber weight and began to track the production. Almost 50 years later in the 1990's Barreda classified his herd into different categories based on denseness of fleece. The most productive animals were called "Accoyo", named after his farm.

Barreda believed that the animals with the best characteristics should be used to father the herd, and only the animals born of the herd were used in future selection. In other words, he used the best as fathers and used the best off-spring to carry-on the best characteristics genetically. It was his belief that the father's lineage would be used to increase the characteristics of the herd's genetics.

In the 1990's Barreda hand selected the best from his herd and shipped them to the U.S. When asked why he sent his best to America, Barreda answered, "They were my business card". To this day, Accoyo alpaca are still considred to carry the same traits of denseness of fleece, as they did a decade ago.

Allianza

When the Peruvian govenment began a land grab, Barreda was in fear of losing his Accoyo farm. However, instead of taking his farm, the Peruvian legal system ordered Don Julio Barreda to send hundreds of his Accoyo alpaca to a neighboring farm, the Rural Allianza Mascusani. Today, Rural Allianza Mascusani is the largest alpaca co-op with over 40,000 alpacas. It continues the Barreda tradition of producing some of the finest quality alpaca in the world. These animals are known as "Allianza". Hemmingway was sent from Rural Allianza Mucasani in 1993 to the U.S. He became the standard for fleece, awards and offspring. With almost 400 registered offspring, Hemmingway genetics are still considered one of the best.

All Spring Lake Alpaca cria are genetically tested / DNA registered with ARI (The Alpaca Registry) when born to provide our farm and our customers with the protection needed to have a successful breeding program, and successful investment, now and in the future.
